Android Phone for Developers in India

Posted on the December 10th, 2008 under Android Phones, Development by Vinod

As you might have already heard, Google has partnered with BrightStar Corp to bring the T-Mobile G1 Android Dev phone 1 to many countries. India is one of the supported countries.

What is Good?

  • The phone is unlocked. You can use your Airtel, Vodafone or BSNL SIMs in this phone
  • The phone is jailbroken. You can have root level access the Phone’s file system(Linux). This also means, you can flash any custom-cooked ROM images on to the phone without worrying about the bootloader issues. You can also run unsigned code
  • When buying from India, you don’t have to worry about Customs/Import duties etc. BrightStar Corp. will pre-pay them for you.
  • The shipment can be tracked [Update: It is shipped via UPS Expedited, in a large package!]
  • The phone is distinctively designed from other G1 phones with a special graphical back-plate!

Now the Bad!

  • I had to pay $624 (Rs.32,106.78) for the freedom device! + $25 for Google Android Market Fee
  • The shopping cart of BrightStar Corp is not so convenient, it now says, I’ve no orders placed
  • The Customer Care Dept of BrightStar Corp do not respond to queries [Update] They did respond and when they did, they did very well!
  • You may get better equipped Android phones from Sony Ericsson / Dell / Asus
  • Being a ‘Developer-Class’ device - there is no Warranty whatsoever for this phone.
  • I have to double check if it will work with the proposed 3G spectrum of 2.1GHz in India.

But if you are an early adopter/Android Developer and want to enjoy the freedom of a totally unlocked device, this is your chance!.

    Hey Vinod
Great thing you’ve got your hands on..
i too am looking forward to get my hands on one.. wonder when they intend to launch it in india.
Since i’m not a developer i do not think it’s viable to go in for the Dev phone.. but do have some doubts.

Does the Dev phone auto update itself..
Do all aplications from the App market work
if i do not play around too much with it would you recommend one for someone like me (an illitrate with linux and java, dont even understand stuff like root directory)
How helpful was airtel to help set up your Dev phone

    Thanks in advance
    Cheers
    Siddharth

    @Sidharth:
Thanks for the Visit!. The fact is that you don’t have to be an actual developer to get the dev-phone. You can just pay $25 to Google and become a developer! (http://market.android.com/publish/Home).
The Dev Phone is supposed to auto-update itself. Each and every application from the Market, I tried - Worked perfectly. In fact, the Dev-Phone has more storage space for programs than the regular G1 ( 3Mb vs 15Mb).
If you are looking for a good looking phone with excellent build-quality, you will be definitely disappointed with the Dev-Phone. Having used an iPhone, I still hesitate to use it as a regular phone/PDA. But the Android Operating system is fantastic and responsiveness of the programs are excellent - Whereas iPhone programs are slow to start. Plus, you can multi-task beautifully.

I can see many people are having issues to setup the brand-new dev-phone with their carrier. But this is a simple thing to solve and many have called me/emailed me to get this step right. I hope to write another blog post to clarify the things better.

    @ Vinod:
personally i find HTC dream good looking and more functunally vialble than the iphone… but the thing that’s stopping me is the “NO WARRANTY” part.
Would you recommend i wait for the Non dev version or should i go in for the Dev 1, i’ve already waited 4 months, another two or three might hurt but i think i’ll be able to make it through..

And yes we all desperately look forward to your post about setting up the Dev phone..

    Cheers and thanks
    Siddharth

    Hey Vinod,

How’s your Dev 1 coming along… i’ve just ordered my G1 waiting it to arrive in India.. just wanted to check if you’re able to connect to the market (if yes then is it the global one or US/UK) and whether your phone’s getting the updates or no.

    Cheers

    HI,

can some body send me the IDEA Pune gprs settings.

  25. Siddharth said, on February 22nd, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Hi, i got the G1 to India (Finally ), it’s unlocked, but the trouble is, it’s yet to be set up (signed in using my Gmail ID and all). The moment i boot the phone a screen comes, that requires me to put in my gmail user name and password… when i put in the required info, it cannot access the google servers (pretty obvious, as i haven’t manually put in the setting to activate my EGPRS on the phone).

Could someone help me here by telling me how to get to the settings page, where i can manually set up my EGPRS settings/choose the right network, without first putting in my gmail username and password

    Thanks a ton

    Cheers
    Sid

P.S. i do have WI-Fi access, but from what i read, it wouldn’t be of much help would it?

I got my ADP 2 weeks back. $399+$25 shipped in US brought via my cousin. For those who want to activate via WIFI use this thread. http://modmygphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9471. I use vodafone live which works good for my mails checking and basic google search. I dont want to go for expensive mobile office. BTW live activation is free usage, is 10p per KB. For 3G, I belive TMobile uses 2100/1700 I am not sure what BSNL is using any ideas ?
